Samuel Dixson

Samuel Dixson, of Greenwich Central School, has been named to the Society for Science and Broadcom Foundation Top 300 competitors in the 2021 Broadcom MASTERS® — the nation’s premier STEM competition for middle school students. The Broadcom MASTERS seeks to inspire young scientists, engineers and innovators to solve the grand challenges of the 21st Century. More than 2/3 of the MASTERS (206) go to public school, with 59 (19.7%) in private school and 15 (5%) in charter schools.  The remaining students are in home, magnet or online schools.

Sam’s research entitled, “Bale or Bail? A Study Evaluating Crops for Freeze Damage and Crop Viability” looked at early pigment responses to freeze damage in hay crops.  Dixson, a rising 7th grader at Greenwich, earned entry into the Broadcom MASTERS competition through placing third at the RPI Greater Capital Region Science and Engineering Fair.  He also competed at the MOST (Museum of Science and Technology) in Syracuse, in June, for the STANYS Science competition in which he won high honors.

30 finalists will be chosen from this select pool of top 300 to compete for more than $100,000 in awards and prizes. Finalists will be announced September 14. See a complete list of the finalists at https://www.societyforscience.org/broadcom-masters/2021-top-300-masters/.
