Greenwich Golf Team – 2021
The Greenwich Golf team finished the “Spring” season with a successful 5 and 2 record. Saratoga Catholic (Wasaren League Champs 8-0) and Hoosick Falls (7-1) earned victories against GCS on their home courses. Greenwich was undefeated at the Battenkill Country Club.
Jake Owens, one of three seniors, led the team once again this year in the number one spot, firing low rounds of 35 and 37. He also led the team with a second place finish in the WASAREN League Invitational. Tyler Ziehm had a solid senior season and battled to five victories. The team’s other senior, Tyler Larmon picked up a win and a tie. Bradley Brophy (sophomore) had an undefeated individual season for the Witches and a top 10 finish in the invitational. Patrick McFee (junior) tallied six wins including the teams only win at Spa Catholic. The season concluded with the team finishing in third place at the Wasaren League Invitational. NYSPHSAA decided not to allow sectional or state level golf tournaments to be held this year, which leaves some questions as to what one of Greenwich’s most talented players, Jake Owens, his teammates and other Section 2 golfers might have accomplished in the postseason.

Nina Sgambelluri led Greenwich to its 17th straight Wasaren League Title, winning the girls race in a time of 16:15.7. In the complete team race standings, Teagan Wright was 2nd, Emily Skiff was 4th, Caroline Kelly was 5th and Caitlyn McClay was 16th for the 28-36 point victory over second place Berlin. Sgambelluri's time bested all runners in the WASAREN girls and boys races. First year head coach Mike Sgambelluri was happy with the overall team effort. “The pandemic presented challenges we have not faced before, but our runners gave it what they had in practices and in this meet.” Technically, this was the Fall 2 season and the meet was run for the 2020 season. There will be no sectional or state championship race this season.
The GCS boys would have likely been in the mix were it not for injuries and illness. As it was, the team was unable to field a complete, five-runner group. The three who ran recorded impressive finishes, led by Matt Bink, who was 2nd by only 1.5 seconds, Dillon Niles (10th) and William Hamilton (11th).
